||Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive genetic condition in which the microscopic cells in the respiratory system called cilia do not function normally. Ultrastructural analysis using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is a common approach for diagnosing PCD. Manually performed diagnostic procedure is time consuming and subjective, and automation of the process is highly desirable. We will present a template matching based method for automated detection of cilia objects in low magnification TEM images at ISBI 2016. In this work we evaluated the performance of a series of synthetic templates generated for this purpose by comparison with ground truth created by an expert pathologist. In the seminar I will present our strategy for the selection of a template providing the best discrimination between cilia and similar structures mimicking cilia objects, and the results summarized in ISBI paper.
