Titel Whole Hand Haptics with True 3D Displays
Sammanfattning The talk will be an overview of a KK-Stiftelse-funded project whose aim is a desktop augmented reality system that will alter radically the way we interact with virtual worlds. This will be accomplished through technological advances yielding high haptic fidelity and unaided 3D visual perception. A holographic optical element, acting as a projection screen for digital projectors, will give the user the perception of a 3D object suspended in space with no physical barriers between viewer and object. With a haptic glove the user may reach into and manipulate in real time high contrast, high resolution, full color, 3D virtual objects while experiencing haptic feedback closely resembling real object manipulation.

Tactile and force feedback will be based on a thorough understanding of the human somatosensory system. The need for high stiffness and high dynamic speed range in combination with force feedback will be met by completely new piezoelectric motors with integrated force and position control for joint actuation. And high stroke, small pitch mechanoreceptor stimulation with millisecond response time will require new actuator material integrated on a flexible carrier that can be mounted inside the glove at the fingertips.

The system has applications in, for example, surgery planning, computer-aided design and 3D games. Furthermore, many sub-components of the system may lead to spin-offs in areas ranging from new actuator materials, to assistive technologies, security, entertainment and internet shopping.
