We are aiming to create an interaction device with the ability to generate tactile stimulation to the fingertip.
Internet retailers exploit two of our senses: vision and hearing. We can see merchandise from different sides and we can see it in different colors and patterns. We can even see a video about its use, where audio enhances the sales pitch. But, because of lack of a suitable interaction medium, Internet retailers do not yet exploit our sense of touch. We cannot feel the quality of fabric or the texture of wood. In this application we propose an interaction device that will form an experimental prototype for solving this problem using an actuator array that generates a texture. This actuator array is based on miniaturized ultrasonic motors that will drive an 8x8 pin matrix with a 1 mm inter-pin distance. But since texture perception of such arrays alone is rather limited, we will add lateral forces and movements by integrating the touch matrix with a motorized x-y table. This combination will allow for complex movement patterns with large speed and resilience variations.
Ongoing project started in 2009.
