Digital imaging systems

November 2008 – January 2009
Centre for Image Analysis, Uppsala University
ECTS credits: 8 hp

Aim
Digital images are becoming increasingly common. The aim of this course is to give a unified perspective on the great variety of imaging technologies that have been developed the last decades. The various imaging technologies will be discussed based on what they are imaging, how and with what quality they are operating. The participants will after the course have a better understanding about the possibilities and limitations with different imaging systems and based on this be able to evaluate the suitability of a particular technology for a particular task.

The subject is highly multi-disciplinary and will be given by invited expert lecturers from many specialties. It should be of interest for PhD students from many different subjects, last time it was offered we had students from 12 different departments.

Contents, study format and form of examination
Introductory overview of possible imaging technologies and principles and the consequent image properties. Guest lectures about a selected representative number of imaging systems by experts. E.g. CCD and CMOS sensors, laser-scanners, laser-radar, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, IR sensors and heat cameras, multispectral scanners and imaging spectroscopy, active and passive microwave sensors, SAR, tomography of various kinds, MR, CT, PET, SPECT, ultrasound, atomic force microscopy. Final exam focusing on the kinds of comparisons between imaging principles discussed in the course.

Target group/s and recommended background
Graduate students from different subjects (material physics, biology, geosciences, medicine...) where imaging and images are being or could be used as tools. Also graduate students interested in methods development in the area e.g. in signal processing, scientific computing or image processing. Basic math and physics and preferably also some experience of digital imaging.
