Title Ongoing medical imaging research projects at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, India
Abstract For the past two decades, CDAC has been in the forefront in the development and deployment of various healthcare applications, primarily for government hospitals in southern parts of India. These include Hospital Information Systems and Telemedicine Systems, which were focused more on development than research. With a view to bring more research content new areas in healthcare domain were being explored. Around 2008, ‘Medical Image Processing’ was initiated as a new area for applied research with the first project ‘CerviSCAN’, which aimed to develop an automated screening system for cervical cancer based on computerized image analysis of PAP smears. This project was done in collaboration with the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram and CBA, Uppsala University. Having understood the potential of computer assisted diagnosis, particularly in the Indian scenario, CDAC has actively pursued this line of research in collaboration with leading hospitals in the region. These include automated systems for detecting breast cancer from mammograms, diabetic retinopathy from fundus images and colon polyps from 3D reconstructed CT images. The following presentation shall provide a overview of these in the activities at CDAC.
