Title Examples of current medical image analysis research at University medical centre Utrecht
Abstract Challenges in Biomedical Image Analysis In order to disambiguate the title of this presentation, the talk is not aimed at providing a visionary display of possible breakthroughs in the field of biomedical image analysis. Much the opposite, it concerns a well established - although still relatively new - approach to evaluating biomedical image analysis algorithms, sometimes also referred to as "grand challenges", in which algorithms that try and solve a specific problem in biomedical image analysis are compared, usually in a competitive fashion. The presentation will describe what challenges are, why they are organized, how they have been and may be set up, and give examples of challenges covering several topics in biomedical image analysis. I will present a condensed version of this lecture, plus a brief overview of the activities in my group wherein I will highlight a few topics, notably detection microinfarcts in high-field MR images, coronary calcium scoring in cardiac CT, and MRI analysis of brain structures in preterm neonates.
