||In this presentation, I will share some of my experiences from being member of various boards and committees since the years when I was a young researcher. My intention is to -- even though my examples are mainly from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) and the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) -- present lessons learnt which are valid for committee work in general. I will mention the benefits of building networks and the drawbacks of spending time out-of-office. I will tell you how precious time on science turns into time-consuming administration. The reason I accept such assignments is the reward to be involved and influence decisions that ultimately give a better scientific world for us all.
