||Colorectal Adenocarcinoma (CAd), a type of colorectal carcinoma originating from epithelial cells of intestinal glands in colon mucosa, accounts for more than 90% of the colorectal carcinomas diagnosed worldwide. Visual examination of the CAd tissue slides, stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E), by expert histopathologists remains the gold standard for CAd grading and prognosis. Morphology of intestinal glands and their surrounding context have been routinely used by the histopathologists to determine the aggressiveness of CAd. However, this rich set of information is still under-utilized as a means for assessing the CAd patients’ prognosis as compared to the TNM staging. In this talk, I will describe a stochastic polygons model for the segmentation of glandular structures in histology images of colon tissue. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first method of its kind which addresses the problem of gland segmentation in healthy colon tissue as well as in various grades of benign and CAd tissue. I will end the talk with an overview of the ongoing research in my group in the area of digital pathology.
Dr. Nasir Rajpoot is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the Qatar University and also an Associate Professor in Computer Science the University of Warwick, UK, on leave since Autumn 2012. He is the founding Head of the BioImage Analysis (BIA) lab at Warwick. Dr Rajpoot received his PhD in digital image processing from the University of Warwick in 2001. Prior to that, he was a postgraduate research fellow in the Applied Mathematics program at Yale University, USA during 1998- 2000. His research interests lie in digital pathology image analysis, multiplex biomarkers in cancer, and pattern recognition. Recent focus of research in his group has been twofold: multi-scale modelling of objects of interest in histology images, and analysis of molecular expression patterns in multi-stain microscopy images. His group has recently won the MITOS-ATYPIA challenge contest on nuclear atypia scoring in breast cancer histology images held in conjunction with ICPR’2014, and was ranked among the top three contestants in the AMIDA challenge contest on mitotic cell detection in breast histology images held in conjunction with MICCAI’2013. Dr Rajpoot has published over 100 articles in the areas of histology image analysis, image coding, and pattern recognition in journals of international repute and in proceedings of highly reputable international conferences. He has chaired several meetings in the area of histopathology image analysis (HIMA). Dr Rajpoot was the General Chair of the Medical Image Understanding and Analysis (MIUA) conference in 2010, and the Technical Chair of the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC) in 2007. He has guest edited a special issue of Machine Vision and Applications on Microscopy Image Analysis and its Applications in Biology in 2012 and another special issue in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and member of the ACM, the British Association of Cancer Research (BACR), and the European Association of Cancer Research (EACR).
