Title Estimation of the pore volume at the interface between paper web and press felt
Abstract Press felts are used to mechanically dewater paper in the paper making progress. The efficiency of the dewatering is highly dependent on the felt surface roughness and the water holding capacity of the felt, therefore the pore volume at the interface between press felt and paper web during contact in the press is important to measure. A compression device has been used in a Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope to image the surface structure of four press felts, and an image analysis method was developed for estimating the water-filled pore volume at the interface between the paper and the press felt. The study show that the estimated interface pores can hold a large amount of water that is available for separation rewetting.
