Titel Icon and aporia: Can images help us build better IT systems?
Sammanfattning Usability of IT systems, sustainability and ethics are important issues, with a growing significance. The problems in each area are very similar in nature. Ready-made answers cannot be found and any solution proposed is easily contested. All three areas are interconnected. With classical and modern philosophy as a foundation, and based on psychological research on ethical decision making, we focus on the way to take care of these issues rather than on normative, political or ideological aspects. It appears that the method used to handle problems in these areas is of crucial importance; and this is also common to all of them. Support of stakeholders' ability to philosophize seems to be the only meaningful way to achieve the goal of usable, good and sustainable IT. One way to do this is by systematizing the problem-solving and decision-making process in a matrix, which provides all aspects of the problem at hand. However, the matrix usually expands beyond the limits of a person's working memory. Thus, the interesting issue is whether it is possible to create an image of the matrix in which both the extent and the detail of information are presented in an equally powerful way to support the philosophizing activity.
