Title A review of stereological principles for image analysis
Abstract Stereology (literally: the study of solids) comprises statistical methods to measure number, length, surface area and volume in three-dimensional material, with an emphasis on unbiased estimates. In a sense, stereology is the very first image analysis people did, way before photography or computing. Sadly, a lot of the knowledge from stereology is not typically taught in image analysis classes, and consequently one often sees statistically biased measurements and other similar, unnecessary mistakes. I introduced a lesson on stereology to the Image Analysis II course last year, and will give a modified version as a seminar for those that did not have the opportunity to learn about stereology before.
