||The eSSENCE program is an initiative in e-Science. eSSENCE is formed as a Strategic Research Area Consortium between Uppsala University, Lund University, and Umeå University, supported by the Ministry of Education and Vetenskapsrådet, and granted more than 100 MSEK during 2010-2014. Since September 1, I am the coordinator of eSSENCE. In this presentation, I will give my definition of what e-Science is about. In short, it is to develop and employ Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based tools for scientific investigations, this way increasing the quality of research. As such e-Science provides many opportunities for collaborations between researchers across disciplines. To make significant progress, e-Science is connected to the development of computational tools and methods, as well as to the readiness of application areas to novel paradigms and to attack scientific challenges from new directions. According to the definition of e-Science, image analysis and visualisation is a part of eSSENCE. I will present ways how we at CBA can become more involved.
