Title Evaluating 2D and 3D map representations for basic geo-spatial assessment
Abstract 3D visualization techniques are no longer reserved for use in highly specialized scientific applications. On the contrary, the consumer product industry has been leading the technical development and has pushed prices for the mass market. While “3D” functionality is presently still an option in many display products, it will soon be an omnipresent feature we can not opt out. In this seminar, I will address issues regarding potential benefits of 3D visualizations. I will present a study that investigated users’ performance in simple spatial tasks. Following the positive experiences reported from applications in the medical field, this study compared two forms of 3D visualizations with a traditional 2D visualization in the context of geographical maps. I will present the results from the experiments and discuss them in light of other previous findings.
