Titel Medical Image Analyser for Cervical Cancer
Sammanfattning Cancer of the uterine cervix is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. It kills more than quarter million women each year. 80% of these deaths occur in the developing countries like India, where no well established or effective screening programmes are available, which makes it the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Screening by PAP smear for the detection of precursors of cervical cancer has been proved to be a successful public health measure which ensures the prevention of this cancer. Systematic population screening programmes by PAP smear could not be implemented in India mainly because of the lack of adequate trained man power to screen all eligible women in the community.
Medical Image Analyser for Cervical Cancer is a project initiated by CDAC, Thiruvananthapuram, IIT-Kharagpur and RCC, Thiruvananthapuram. The project aims to develop an image processing software for analyzing and detecting pre-cancerous lesions from cervical smear images. The end product “CerviSCAN” will be a semi-automated system, particularly useful for negative screening and a cost effective solution for cervical cancer control.
This project is also identified by the Dept. of Information Technology, Govt. of India and VINNOVA, Sweden for Indo-Swedish Technical collaboration. The collaborating partner on Swedish side is the Centre for Images Analysis, Uppsala University.
