Title Stereology-based image analysis in biology
Abstract Stereology gives the scientist a set of methods for performing three-dimensional measurements on two-dimensional images. Stereology is built on a statistical foundation and supplies a variety of methods for 3-D measurements. It is often used in microscopy, both in materials science and in biology / medicine to estimate volumes, volume fractions, length densities, number of objects among many other things. Together with image analysis, it is possible to automate the stereological methods by segmenting the images in the image analysis step and thereafter perform the stereological operations on the segmented image.
