Title Quantifying large defects and measuring fibre wall thickness in CT images of wood fibre composites
Abstract The mechanical strength of composite materials is directly related to the largest defects. To access this relationship in detail, a series of experiment that spans from manufacturing of samples to mechanical testing is currently proceeding. It will be shown how image analysis plays a major role in this process.
To measure thickness and other geometrical properties of wood fibres is important for understanding force distribution in materials during stress and strains caused by for example moisture intrusion. An estimator for fibre wall thickness with sub pixel precision will be presented. By incorporating high level geometrical a priori knowledge it avoids some pitfalls but it's an open question whether it is bias free or not.
